Games Diary - The Opening Ceremony & Day 1

Posted by Vicky Paterson on 7/25/2014 to Commonwealth Games 2014
The Glasgow Commonwealth Games kicked off on Wednesday night in spectacular fashion, showcasing some iconic Scottish cliches. Danny Boyles London 2012 extravaganza was always going to be a tough act to follow and to the credit of the Glasgow 2014 organisers they didn’t attempt to replicate it. Instead a steady stream of tartan, bagpipes, Tunnocks teacakes and a parade of Scottish achievements is what viewers and spectators were treated to. This was Glasgow in full party mode and in typical Glaswegian style nothing was taking too seriously but instead with a great sense of humour and fun. An amazing way to kick off the next ten days of sport and celebration in the city and we are looking forward to seeing what there is to come.

DAY 1
There was devastating news from the England camp yesterday morning with Mo Farah issuing a statement saying that due to sickness he would not be competing in this years games. A blow to the Games organisers and the cities athletic enthusiasts for whom, having Farah race would've been brilliant to see. As they say though the Games must go on and go on they did. With success in Judo for Scottish duo Kimberley and Louise Renicks both winning gold. Louise came by PSL shortly before the games to have some printing done and talked about the excitement and build up there is before such a huge competition.  It’s great to see the pressure didn't get to her and she came away with a really well deserved victory.

There was also success in the Triathlon for England’s Alistair Brownlee and Jodie Stimpson who both managed to clinch Gold medals and more success for Bradley Wiggins at The Chris Hoy Velodrome winning silver in the team pursuit. Cycling is steadily growing in popularity and here at PSL we are working hard on developing our range of cycling products, already stocking kit for The VC Glasgow South cycling club VC Glasgow South

Maybe the biggest stories of the day though came from the pool. With Scottish swimmer Hannah Mylie exceeding all expectations by securing gold in the 400metre Individual Medley after a stunning swim which kept us all on the edge of our seats. There were celebrations also for the Scottish men with Michael Jamieson achieving silver and Ross Murdoch securing Gold in the 200metre breaststroke.

Perhaps our favourite moment of the night was Murdochs look of total shock after seeing what he had managed to do, mouthing “ **** me”, a truly Scottish response.

A really fantastic day of sport with many twists, turns and shocks. We are gearing up for a day of printing Uganda 7’s shirts in time for Saturday’s 7’s event. As well as watching the Scottish Men’s Hockey Preliminary MA match today at 11:00 and Scottish Women’s Preliminary WB match at 16:00 to see some PSL designed gear in action! Make sure to tune in and support our guys and girls!

On a final note check out our favourite selfie of the day, a photo bomb of two of the Australian Hockey players and the Queen. If you have any great pictures from the Games then please get them into us at Vicky@pslteamsports.com
